Altera in the news: Five stories you might’ve missed

Over the last few weeks, Altera Digital Health subject matter experts have been featured in several healthcare-industry publications, sharing their insights and best practices to drive healthcare organizations forward. In case you missed them, here are some highlights:

FierceHealthcare published a byline by Dr. Laura Kohlhagen, Chief Medical Officer for Sunrise™, on electronic health records (EHR) and flexibility. In the article, Dr. Kohlhagen discusses how different elements of EHR flexibility—configuration, customization and personalization—help determine how effectively and efficiently EHRs work for healthcare organizations overall as well as for individual users. Drawing on her experience as an OB-GYN, Dr. Kohlhagen notes how EHRs with low flexibility force providers to conform to unintuitive workflows and detract from time that could otherwise be spent with patients.

Dr. Kohlhagen also contributed an article to Becker’s Hospital Review on three factors that comprise EHR usability. In addition to flexibility, she discusses how today’s EHRs must reflect and complement providers’ thought processes and preferred workflows. Similarly, Dr. Kohlhagen underscores the need to bring meaningful data to the forefront of the EHR so providers have all the information they need to make informed care decisions in a timely manner. Given the widespread issues of provider shortages and burnout, it is crucial for organizations to enable better user experiences.

Physician using EHR on computerBecker’s Hospital Review also shared a byline by Shanna DeLeo, Senior Vice President of Development for Sunrise, on achieving financial stability. Specifically, she details signs that a hospital is incurring unnecessary losses—and what strategies organizations can follow to correct these issues. For example, she discusses how health IT can help hospitals improve patient identification and standardize charge capture to reduce denials and increase reimbursement.

In the U.K., Building Better Healthcare featured an article by Dr. Ed Hutchison, Clinical Solutions Specialist and a practicing doctor with the National Health Service (NHS). Due to bed deficits across many NHS hospitals, patients are facing long wait times and receiving treatment in corridors and carparks. As the face of the NHS, providers then bear the brunt of patients’ frustrations. In the article, Dr. Hutchison notes how patient flow solutions can help hospitals manage patient flow challenges by providing real-time insight into bed availability and patient movement so providers can ensure patients receive the right level of care in a timely manner.

Finally, Digital Health recently published an article on Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust—an Altera Sunrise client and the first organization in the U.K. to implement Altera Patient Flow™. The organization implemented the solution at one of its hospitals in March 2024 to address challenges discussed in Dr. Hutchison’s piece, and early feedback has been promising. In the article, Mary Fleming, Chief Executive of Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh, says the solution, “will play a major role in creating a seamless, integrated healthcare system … that keeps pace with the demands of the modern healthcare system.”
