Altera Digital Health’s Sunrise™ electronic patient record with integrated patient administration system has gone live at Fordcombe Hospital, a hospital acquired by Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust (MTW) from private provider Spire Healthcare. MTW officially took over the running of the renamed Fordcombe Hospital on 1 October 2024 following the purchase of the site in April 2024. MTW is now helping to enhance clinical services and provide additional NHS capacity across the region.
Altera’s integrated solution is supporting the hospital as the Trust expands care capacity and treats a significant number of the longest-waiting patients in Kent and Medway. Almost 1,700 patients have already been transferred to MTW for treatment and a further 800 will be transferred by the end of March 2025.
Fordcombe Hospital is the 23rd NHS hospital across England to go live with Altera’s Sunrise EPR. MTW has been successfully using the system throughout its other hospital sites since introducing it in 2021, when it went live across all 32 adult inpatient wards, three paediatric areas, two emergency departments, order communications, and outpatient services.
The rollout at Fordcombe Hospital took less than six months. Once the IT infrastructure was in place, patients were registered on the hospital systems and the new teams were trained on how to use the integrated PAS and Sunrise within two weeks.
MTW is using the newly acquired hospital to provide planned care in ear, nose and throat; orthopaedics; gastroenterology; diagnostics; and endoscopy. The additional facilities include two theatres; 28 inpatient and day care beds; additional diagnostics including X-ray, MRI, CT and endoscopy; and a number of consultation and treatment rooms.
Sue Forsey, Director of IT at MTW, said: “This is an exciting opportunity for the NHS in Kent and Medway that is benefiting patients across our communities. I’m pleased we’ve been able to support the new facility with an effective EPR foundation as it moves forward to reduce waiting lists and respond to increasing demand. The trust is already seeing the impact the additional capacity is making to patient care and experience. I want to thank everyone involved for their fantastic support and hard work over the last six months.”
Rachael Fox, Executive Vice President, EMEA at Altera Digital Health, said: “I would like to congratulate MTW on successfully acquiring Fordcombe Hospital and going live with its integrated Sunrise EPR. The Altera team takes great pride in providing the trust with its integrated clinical and patient administration solution to support increasing capacity. Completing the EPR implementation within six months is an excellent achievement. Sunrise can be deployed at pace and scale, and delivers convergence across multiple sites to adapt to the increasing requirements in healthcare delivery and data sharing, due to its flexibility and agility.”
MTW is one of the best performing acute hospital trusts in the country against a backdrop of record-breaking attendances, and colleagues recently ranked the trust in the top 10 hospital trusts to work for in England.

First healthcare organizations adopt cloud-native EHR to reduce downtime, enable innovative care
NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – February 11, 2025 – Altera Digital Health, a global health IT leader, today announced that four hospital systems plan to implement Paragon® Denali, a cloud-native electronic health record (EHR) designed for rural, critical access and community hospitals. Built in the Microsoft Azure cloud platform, Paragon Denali leverages containerized services and a software-as-a-service (SaaS) model, offering the reliability and flexibility healthcare organizations need to address industry-wide challenges and enable better care experiences.
Paragon Denali, made generally available by Altera in late 2024, will be adopted by:
- Columbus Community Hospital, a 50-bed acute care facility in Columbus, Nebraska
- Pipeline Health System, a four-facility system serving Los Angeles County, California
- Sioux Falls Specialty Hospital, located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota
- West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital, a 107-bed facility serving southwestern Louisiana
“Columbus Community Hospital’s mission and vision are to improve the health of the communities we serve and deliver the highest quality of care. The implementation of appropriate technology is crucial to these goals,” said Stacy Westfall, IT Director, Columbus Community Hospital. “Paragon has served as our main EHR foundation for many years. We have recently seen a lot of growth and improvement with Altera and are excited to strengthen our partnership with them as we transition to Paragon Denali. We eagerly anticipate the positive impact this next step will have on the care we provide to our patients and to all those who love them.”
Through the combination of the cloud and containerized services, after deployment, Paragon Denali will enable these organizations to implement system upgrades and enhancements more efficiently, minimize downtime and scale the system as needed, limiting constraints. The EHR platform provides healthcare organizations with a single source of truth by integrating clinical, financial, revenue cycle and enterprise resource planning (ERP) data in real time. This alignment enables organizations with limited resources to empower clinical decision-makers while reducing data redundancies, unnecessary costs and IT complexities for administrative and operational teams. Paragon’s proven EHR capabilities and the power of the cloud will help Paragon Denali clients make meaningful, sustainable changes benefiting both patients and providers.
“Hospitals are facing several competing challenges, such as provider burnout, financial instability, and cyberthreats, while simultaneously aiming to improve interoperability and harness AI. Our investment in the cloud will not only enable hospitals to evolve amid external pressures, but to also innovate into the future,” said Mark Bruno, Executive Vice President for Paragon, Altera Digital Health. “Moving the needle at client organizations is Altera’s true measure of success. We at Altera are pleased to support these organizations as they transition to Paragon Denali, fostering growth and success through our continued partnership.”

The Philippines, October 2024 – St. Luke’s Medical Center in the Philippines has gone live with Altera Digital Health’s Sunrise™ electronic health record (EHR) platform, marking its formal transition from paper to digital records.
St. Luke’s Medical Center is recognised as the leading healthcare institution in the Philippines and one of the most advanced hospitals in the world. The private hospital has more than 1,000 beds and manages over 48,000 admissions and 2.7 million outpatient consultations annually. Arguably the most advanced platform of its kind in the Philippines, Sunrise will be used across the centre’s Quezon City and Global City facilities.
A highly configurable solution with integrative capabilities, Sunrise is a comprehensive open platform that connects all aspects of care across the entire care continuum, complementing St. Luke’s patient-centered approach to clinical care. It is used by many of the leading hospitals and health systems in the APAC region, providing them with clinician-specific workflows, and adding support that can lead to improved clinical outcomes.
St. Luke’s is pleased to bring Altera’s Sunrise solution on board. This smarter, scalable technology can help deliver more responsive patient care. EHRs have increasingly been recognised for improving patient care and enhancing efficiencies in healthcare processes. The Sunrise platform’s support will enable St. Luke’s team to digitise data, streamline existing processes, and achieve further scalability while providing secure facilitation and management of patient records, supporting clinicians in delivering the best care possible to patients.
The adoption of Sunrise EHR can help St. Luke’s Medical Center evaluate the outcomes of its interventions and treatments for its patients. By digitising the complex processes of clinical care on the EHR platform, doctors and clinicians can collaborate and manage patients’ health records more effectively. Eliminating outdated, time-consuming administrative tasks, allows clinicians to better focus on contributing to more value-based care for their patients.
“At St. Luke’s Medical Center, we are enhancing patient care through the adoption of Altera’s Sunrise EHR platform. This advanced technology enables our clinicians to collaborate more efficiently, streamline processes, and maintain a strong focus on patient-centered care, all while securely managing health records,” said Dr. Dennis P. Serrano, President and Chief Executive Officer of St. Luke’s Medical Center.
Sunrise can also empower clinicians with clinical decision support functions, providing information to assist them in making the right decisions on medication for their patients and improving patient outcomes. Through its sophisticated connected medication management feature, doctors can leverage the platform promptly to check on their prescription’s proper dosing and any drug-to-drug interactions with their patients.
Using the Sunrise™ EHR platform, clinicians can get a unified view of their patient’s health records and better organise their care history while their patients are with St. Luke’s Medical Center. The platform can act as an information hub across the healthcare system, making it possible for clinicians to holistically review patients’ past notes and care plans, helping solve the problem of fragmented records that many patients with multiple care providers have.
“Altera Digital Health is heartened to have the opportunity to share the benefits of Sunrise with an esteemed healthcare institution like St. Luke’s Medical Center, and we look forward to supporting them in solving the information burden that many providers in the healthcare industry face,” said Todd Haebich, Executive Vice President, APAC.
“Our Sunrise EHR platform is designed with flexibility in mind, and we believe it will equip St. Luke’s Medical Center with the tools to optimise their digital processes to support their patient and clinician needs, paving the way for stronger and better care delivery, while better supporting healthcare practitioners’ workloads.”

Software-as-a-service EHR gives rural, critical access and community hospitals a complete system to support their independence
NEW YORK – October 29, 2024 – Altera Digital Health, a global health IT leader, today announced that Paragon® Denali, an electronic health record (EHR) natively deployed in the Microsoft Azure cloud platform, is now generally available. Leveraging a software-as-a-service (SaaS) model, Paragon Denali brings cloud-enabled features and containerized services to rural, critical access and community hospitals, providing greater system reliability and data accessibility while supporting organizational growth and improved user experiences.
Hospitals require rapid, ongoing access to real-time data to drive informed decision-making, from clinical diagnosis to financial and operational efficiency. With these needs in mind, Altera built Paragon Denali on Azure with containerized services to minimize client downtime and, in turn, disruptions to patient care and cash flow. Clients will now be able to easily implement upcoming functionalities from Altera in an expedited manner. In addition to a reduction in hardware and maintenance costs, hospitals on Paragon Denali will have the ability to scale the system up or down as needed. As longtime partners, Altera and Microsoft’s combined power will also provide clients the advanced security controls needed to help protect against the evolving threat landscape.
“Paragon has been an essential investment for our healthcare system, driving EMR best practices across our hospitals. Our providers and clinical and operational end users have the flexibility they need to focus on providing safe, quality patient care,” said Meghan Bisping, Chief Information Officer, Pipeline Health System. “Altera’s investment of time and resources into their solutions has provided important support as we meet the rising demands of healthcare. We look forward to seeing how our work with Altera for Paragon Denali will drive our organization’s future success.”
Paragon Denali offers clients proven EHR capabilities as well as a single database by integrating emergency department, ambulatory, financial, revenue cycle and enterprise resource planning data. Leveraging a single system across the organization not only provides a single source of clinical truth to busy providers, but also reduces data redundancy, IT complexity and costs. As market consolidation expands in healthcare, Paragon Denali will provide tools to help clients maintain their independence, achieve financial stability and continue providing high-quality care to their communities.
“Community hospitals often have fewer resources than large health systems, but they must navigate many of the same regulatory requirements, financial pressures and IT complexities,” said Mark Bruno, Executive Vice President for Paragon, Altera Digital Health. “Paragon Denali was designed to fulfill the unique needs of these organizations and enable them to steadily evolve with the entire industry. I’m proud of the team’s relentless focus in bringing Paragon Denali to life, and I look forward to bringing higher-level EHR experiences to our clients as they take this next step with Altera.”
“The cloud represents a new era for healthcare, enabling organizations to respond to evolving clinical and operational pressures while empowering providers with robust data and AI-driven capabilities,” said Todd Mersch, General Manager, Health & Life Sciences, Microsoft. “Paragon Denali on Microsoft Azure is a new chapter in our longstanding relationship with Altera as we work to unlock the full value of health data and meaningfully improve healthcare experiences for providers and patients alike.”

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has successfully gone live with Altera’s Sunrise™ Knowledge-based Medication Administration (KBMA) system, across all adult inpatient wards. This move enhances patient safety with closed-loop medicine administration and will accelerate digital maturity towards the HIMSS Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM) stage 6 target.
Over a three-week period last month, the system was rolled out in phases starting with three early adopter wards at the trust’s Cheltenham General Hospital site. The trust specifically selected three wards that had stable populations and patients with medium to high medication needs. This approach enabled the system to be put through its paces and adjustments to be made before rolling out to all remaining adult inpatient wards at the site a week later.
The final stage of the implementation saw all adult inpatient wards successfully go live at the trust’s other major regional hospital site, Gloucestershire Royal, the following week.
Known to staff as the Scan4Safety initiative, the new system is enabling users to positively identify patients and validate medicines at the point of drug administration using barcode technology within Sunrise KBMA. The new functionality is driving a fully closed-loop medication administration process, which is safer, smarter and more streamlined.
Speaking on the reception the new solution has had from patients, Matt Little, CNIO at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said, “I’ve been out on the wards following each go-live and patients clearly recognise the importance of ensuring patient identification while administering medications.
“They also appreciate the steps we are taking to verify medications. On some wards, we have patients who receive multiple different medications and the process of assembling those together with ensuring you’ve got the right strength and dose all comes under the ethos of the Scan4Safety initiative.”
From a staffing perspective, it is supporting teams to reduce adverse drug events and administration errors by acting as a trusted “digital colleague.” It is providing extra confidence when administering medications and validating the five rights of medication administration: Right Patient, Right Medication, Right Time, Right Route and Right Dose.
The recent go-live is part of a comprehensive digital transformation strategy to increase digital maturity and reach HIMSS EMRAM Stage 6 accreditation. Closed-loop medicine management is a key requirement for HIMSS EMRAM certification, a globally recognised standard of digital maturity linked to safety and efficiency.
Sunrise KBMA is a key element of the strategy that also included implementing the Sunrise™ EPR in 2019. The closed-loop medicines management solution, incorporating electronic prescribing, the interface to the Pharmacy departmental solution, clinical decision support and now closed loop medicines administration has been deployed within the single Sunrise EPR platform to provide faster access to patient records while delivering care.
In summary, James Hodgin, ePMA Programme Lead said, “The successful go-live is the culmination of months of work from the dedicated team we have at the trust. We’ve had fantastic support from senior leadership, clinical and digital colleagues on this programme. The enthusiasm and support across successive go-lives in ePMA phase 2 has enabled us to deliver real change, culminating in CLMA. Everyone involved has done an amazing job, helping to increase our digital maturity and embed a safe care delivery model across the trust, for which I am very grateful.
“Since going live, CLMA has continued to bed in well, in the first week of September alone 14,315 patient scans were recorded and 66,335 medications were scanned. As a trust we’re keen to deliver the benefits which Closed Loop promised, and in early evaluations with our nursing staff 93% saw the benefit of the system and 64% said the system makes them feel safer when administering medications. It’s a really promising start at this early stage.”
Rachael Fox, Executive Vice President, EMEA at Altera Digital Health, said, “It’s been wonderful supporting Gloucestershire Hospitals on their accelerated path to digital excellence and the team there has done amazingly well. The trust was aware of the capabilities of the system after seeing it go-live at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the contribution it made to the trust reaching the first HIMSS EMRAM State 7 status in Europe on the new standard. It gave the trust the confidence to select Sunrise KBMA, so I’m pleased we’ve been able to work together to emulate the solution and its benefits at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.”

30 July 2024: Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (WWL) has become the first organisation in the UK to deploy Altera Digital Health’s patient flow solution. The Trust expects the system to be integral in realising operational efficiencies and improving patient safety and care, including making discharge more streamlined.
The system has gone live at the Trust’s Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, which provides a base for emergency and acute services for 326,000 local people. Ward staff, along with the bed management, portering, domestic, and infection prevention and control teams, are using the system either directly or via integration with its existing Altera Sunrise™ EPR system.
Altera Patient Flow ™ is providing visibility of capacity with real-time insight into bed status, bed availability and patient movement across the whole hospital that it didn’t have before. Greater oversight is making it possible to take a proactive approach to manage emergency and elective patient flow.
The solution went live in March. Pam Green, Deputy Director for Clinical Informatics and Chief Nursing Information Officer at WWL, said: “Overall the rollout has been really successful. Staff have embraced the change and the technology adoption has been brilliant. They understand that by supporting the service improvement it won’t just make a difference to their working day but will ultimately have a big impact on our patients. We’ve had some very positive feedback from staff in terms of usability and accessibility and releasing time to reinvest back into patient care.”
Patient Flow has digitally transformed the portering and domestic workflows. Instead of tracking tasks with pen and paper, the domestic team can move around with an iPad, which clearly shows their job list. Similarly, the portering team’s radios have been replaced by iPhones to manage requests and worklists via an app.
The domestic team is benefitting from the system automatically allocating jobs in the vicinity where they’ve finished cleaning a bed to streamline workflow and use capacity as effectively as possible. If a bed is reserved in the system, a priority clean will automatically be generated for the bed over others that are vacant. This enables patients to move around the hospital more quickly and efficiently.
Kevin Parker-Evans, Chief Nursing Officer at WWL, said: “The digital transformation has driven a significant culture change. Throughout my career bed management has always been a paper collation exercise , but paper is never live. By the time you’ve finished gathering the information it will have changed. That’s why the bed managers particularly like the bed board in the system. They can access a real-time glance of every bed on site, which shows whether a bed is occupied/vacant, along with the cleaning status. It’s given us a true live state and now we intend to use it to navigate our bed and capacity meetings.”
The solution is also giving the Trust oversight of capacity from an infection prevention perspective. Staff can see areas that are infected and can’t be used or need reviewing. Historically, this was managed with spreadsheets. If a patient has an infection status and they leave a bed permanently, the system will automatically generate a bed clean to increase resource utilisation and minimise delays.
The Trust is also using the system to improve discharge processes to gain further efficiency savings. With bed management, a lot of time was wasted by staff being reliant on manually collecting discharge data by visiting each ward. Patient Flow will automate these processes and give more visibility and autonomy to manage the flow of patients who are coming on and off the wards, helping the Trust increase the number of patients that are discharged before midday.
Following a current/future state analysis, the Trust is projected to double the number of people discharged before noon. Longer term, it is aiming to achieve 40% of morning discharges by 10 a.m.
Mary Fleming, Chief Executive of WWL, said: “WWL is a digitally enabled Trust following investment in our EPR infrastructure and combined with patient flow management it will provide crucial real-time data for decision-making. This will play a major role in creating a seamless, integrated healthcare system that prioritises patient needs, enhances staff efficiency and keeps pace with the demands of the modern healthcare landscape.”
Rachael Fox, Executive Vice President, EMEA at Altera Digital Health, said: “We are glad to be building on our digital partnership with WWL with the deployment of Altera Patient Flow. The Trust is pioneering its use to prioritise flow, which will be a key digital enabler to unlock workflow optimisation, increased capacity and enhanced care. Planning has started on rolling the system out further across the Trust’s Wrightington Hospital and day surgery sites.”

EAST GRINSTEAD, ENGLAND – April 18, 2024 – Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (QVH), a specialist centre providing life-changing reconstructive surgery and rehabilitation for patients across the South East of England, has signed a five-year contract with Altera Digital Health to deliver an electronic patient record (EPR) system.
To meet NHS England’s target for trusts to have an electronic patient record by March 2026, QVH has purchased Altera Sunrise™ EPR, which includes Core Clinicals, Order Comms, eObservations, Secure Health Messaging, Mobile, Patient Flow, Clinical Performance Manager, Theatres, e-Prescribing, and PAS, all supported by Altera Managed Services.
A fully integrated EPR is central to the Trust’s digital strategy and will support staff to do more with connected information and enhance patient care. Considerable efficiency savings are expected to be released in areas where the system will replace paper processes and prevent the need to log into separate systems to compile patient information. The valuable time saved will enable staff to focus on providing the best possible care for patients.
QVH’s world-leading clinical teams provide specialist surgery and non-surgical treatment for people across the south east and beyond. It offers regional and national services in conditions of the hands and eyes (corneoplastics), head and neck cancer and skin cancer, reconstructive breast surgery, maxillofacial surgery and prosthetics. QVH also runs a minor injuries unit, therapies services and a sleep disorder centre.
The trust is the second specialist trust to select Altera’s EPR, following Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, which was recently awarded HIMSS Stage 7 accreditation.
Kirstin Timmins, Chief Operating Officer, at QVH said: “Finalising the contract with Altera is an important milestone for QVH. Developing an EPR is an exciting project for us and a significant part of our digital and overall organisational strategy. The EPR system will support us to seamlessly collaborate and deliver timely, informed care, significantly reducing the time taken to access patient information. Colleagues were impressed with the benefits of Altera’s solution and are eager to progress the project and plan to go live.”
Colleagues working in QVH’s community services will benefit from remote access to the integrated record, with the ability to contribute to a patient’s record during home visits and appointments at regional clinics. These episodes of care will be updated in real-time and available for staff to access in the main hospital site.
The flexibility and integration capabilities of the Altera EPR solution will be utilised heavily at QVH, with data from other NHS trusts available for clinicians to view as part of the new electronic patient record.
Rachael Fox, Executive Vice President, EMEA at Altera Digital Health, said, “We are delighted to be partnering with QVH to deliver its EPR. The team’s enthusiasm for change has been amazing and staff is already seeing how transformative the impact will be. We can’t wait to get started on delivery and quickly advance the trust’s digital maturity.”
