Users at community hospitals, rehabilitation facilities give EHR highest marks for operational excellence

NEW YORK—July 25, 2023—Altera Digital Health, a global health IT leader, today announced that Sunrise™, an integrated electronic health record (EHR) built for hospitals and health systems, earned the No. 1 ranking on Black Book Research’s lists of the top inpatient EHRs for community hospitals with 101–250 beds as well as the top EHRs and support solutions for acute rehabilitation hospitals. The nationwide rankings are based on customer satisfaction surveys of EHR system users, across 18 key performance indicators, and were conducted from Q2 2022 through Q3 2023.

More than 1.2 million health IT users are invited to participate in Black Book’s annual survey of clinical, administrative, IT and finance leaders. Respondents from community hospitals with 101–250 beds gave Sunrise the highest scores among 23 total vendors for nine criteria, including reliability and consistency; innovation and optimization; and strategic alignment of client goals. Additionally, inpatient rehab hospital respondents rated Sunrise highest among 45 vendors for 10 criteria, including data security, patient privacy and backup services; support and customer care; and best-of-breed technology and process improvement.

“Altera aims to make healthcare easier to access, understand and navigate. It’s incredibly rewarding to have users across disciplines validate that Sunrise is delivering on those goals,” said Marcus Perez, President, Altera Digital Health. “From research and development to client service, I’m extremely proud of the Sunrise team, its unwavering focus on operational excellence and this recognition from Black Book.”

Designed with and for users at hospitals and health systems, Sunrise delivers a single-platform solution for an integrated continuum of care, giving clinicians the most current information available at the point of care. Sunrise includes acute, ambulatory and revenue cycle capabilities that help healthcare organizations achieve clinical, operational and financial success and drive next-level healthcare.

17 July 2023: Mark Hutchinson, a Top 100 CIO, has recently been appointed Altera Digital Health’s Vice President of Healthcare Strategy & Transformation, EMEA. The clinical information systems provider is one of the leading providers of electronic patient records in the UK and works with a number of top performing trusts.

Mark has more than 20 years of experience in NHS IT with eight of them at board level, and joins Altera Digital Health after five years as Executive Chief Digital Information Officer at Gloucestershire NHS Foundation Trust.

During his time in the NHS, he has enabled some of the most impactful and successful digital transformation projects. This includes delivering the UK’s first telemedicine service in 2007 at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust and, most recently, deploying an EPR in only five months at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Mark led the Sunrise™ EPR implementation at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust in 2013, which became the most digitally mature trust in the country in 2015 and then achieved Global Digital Exemplar status.

Throughout his career, Mark has championed taking an alternative approach to digital transformation by taking a faster, flexible and more efficient route to EPR deployments with modular approaches, which are often less disruptive and generate faster benefits for both patients and clinicians. His approach ensures a focus on patient care is the first step in successful EPR implementation.

In his new role, Mark intends to guide trusts to take similar approaches that are cost effective and deliver instant benefits to patient care.

“I know how challenging the current landscape is for NHS providers to deliver digital transformation,” Mark said “An EPR supplier duopoly is a real threat, and against this inflexible backdrop, innovation is at risk, as is taxpayer’s money.

“I joined Altera Digital Health because I am passionate about delivering technology that genuinely makes a difference to patients and clinicians. I’m excited by the opportunity to help more NHS organisations accelerate their digital maturity and bring in changes that transform patient care and make life better for frontline staff, without exhausting budgets or taking years to realise benefits.”

The appointment comes as part of Altera Digital Health’s drive to accelerate growth across the UK and ensure NHS trusts are equipped to deliver transformative digital projects quickly, using national or local budgets.

Mark continued, “The traditional model for EPR implementation is not fit for purpose. It’s extremely disruptive, and can be harmful to patients. I’m deeply passionate about championing an alternative platform approach to solutions that provides a fast, flexible and clinically driven roadmap towards digital maturity across integrated care systems and delivers rapid improvements for both patients and clinicians.”

Rachael Fox, Altera Digital Health Executive Vice President, UK & EMEA, said, “We’re delighted to welcome Mark to the Altera Digital Health team. Bringing his extensive digital transformation leadership experience, expertise and passion, Mark will be pivotal in delivering digital transformation projects at pace for many NHS organisations going forward.”

SINGAPORE – June 2023 – Altera Digital Health, formerly the Allscripts Hospitals and Large Physician Practices business segment and a global leader in healthcare IT, has announced that its Sunrise™ Oncology solution has gone live at National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS), a specialty centre under SingHealth, Singapore’s largest public healthcare group.

SingHealth, supported by the national HealthTech agency Integrated Health Information Systems (IHiS), will be using Sunrise Oncology to elevate its  multi-disciplinary and integrated care approach for more than 30,000 healthcare professionals in its network of acute hospitals, national specialty centres, community hospitals and polyclinics, which serve almost half of  Singapore’s healthcare needs.

As part of NCCS’ commitment to deliver high quality cancer care to patients in Singapore and the region, SingHealth started working on an extended e-chemotherapy project that encompasses the delivery of Sunrise Oncology as one component.

Sunrise Oncology is an oncology-specific EMR solution that provides clinicians the tools they need to support the complexities of cancer care. It provides decision support at the point of clinical prescribing and evidence-based treatment regimens with real-time analysis of efficacy, toxicities and outcomes.

The intention is to create a paperless electronic oncology workflow by consolidating the workflow for medical oncology across multiple SingHealth institutions, including NCCS, Singapore General Hospital (SGH), KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital, and satellite and outpatient cancer treatment centres at Sengkang General Hospital and Changi General Hospital. This brings together existing paper and electronic workflows into Sunrise to standardise and enhance the integration with patients’ electronic medical records. For example, a patient may receive their diagnosis and undergo their initial treatment at NCCS (or even as an inpatient at SGH), but subsequently choose to receive the remaining cancer treatment in a satellite centre closer to where they live for greater convenience. With Sunrise Oncology, doctors, nurses and pharmacists from across SingHealth institutions will have visibility of key patient information, including their prior treatment and any important notes (such as any adverse drug reactions).

“The implementation of Sunrise Oncology across SingHealth institutions provides a cluster-wide integrated oncology solution, which enables clinicians to access patient data more efficiently, improves patient safety and ensures seamless continuity of care for the patient,” said Associate Professor Lita Chew, Group Director, Allied Health, SingHealth and Head of Pharmacy Department, NCCS.

To meet growing healthcare needs, the new 24-storey NCCS building was officially opened in 2023 with increased capacity and expanded facilities dedicated to cancer care, rehabilitation, research and education.

As part of this expansion, Sunrise Oncology has been implemented in phases to standardise oncology workflows and streamline processes across all SingHealth institutions. This will support workflows for both solid tumours and blood cancers across oncology and haematology services — across institutions — and provide seamless integration with other Sunrise modules.

Todd Haebich, Executive Vice President, APAC of Altera Digital Health congratulated SingHealth on the Sunrise Oncology go-live at NCCS.

“Altera Digital Health is committed to driving a new era of healthcare powered by the Platform of Health; one with greater interoperability and lessened information burden that drives value-based care for improved health outcomes,” Haebich said “The flexibility of the Sunrise solution has enabled SingHealth to develop and build on the platform to deploy customised tools alongside a wide range of oncology protocol regimes. This ensures high-quality and standardised care, where patients can seamlessly move from inpatient care to outpatient care and vice versa. The Sunrise platform will support SingHealth in strengthening its care management processes and advancing its continued delivery of reliable, quality healthcare to Singaporeans.”

Anna Grammare, General Manager of Altera Digital Health Singapore and Philippines, added, “This has been a momentous and exciting 18 months for Altera in Singapore. We are proud to be supporting SingHealth in the rollout of Sunrise Oncology across the various institutions despite the massive impact of COVID-19 and other health system pressures. SingHealth and Altera Digital Health teams have worked closely to develop a solution that meets requirements across the different settings – inpatient, outpatient and in the future, paediatrics. The final solution is fit for purpose and integrates seamlessly into current workflows and into the Sunrise ecosystem at SingHealth.”

“As the technology agency for Singapore’s public healthcare sector, we strive to transform healthcare and improve the lives of patients through harnessing technology,” said Hooi Ka Mei, Director, Delivery Ops Management & Planning of Integrated Health Information Systems (IHiS). “We are proud to have been a part of this transformative journey for SingHealth, ensuring a seamless transition from its legacy system to Sunrise Oncology. We are confident that the new workflow and solution will pave the way for better oncology care for patients.”

Amidst the changing needs in the healthcare industry, Altera Digital Health is focused on delivering innovation across the entire care continuum and strengthening optimisation for hospital systems, creating long-term interoperability and changing how healthcare can be delivered.

21 June 2023: Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHFT) has gone live with electronic prescribing and medicines administration (ePMA), as the next step in the trust’s five-year digital transformation journey. The Altera Digital Health solution was introduced as part of the trust’s Sunrise™ electronic patient record (EPR), also provided by Altera Digital Health.

As of February 2023, the system has been fully optimised and the entire prescribing and administration process has been digitised. This is across more than 50 adult inpatient wards over the two hospital sites, two emergency departments and a specialist oncology centre. It is already supporting improvements to patient safety, enhancing clinical workflows and improving patient flow.

With adult inpatient clinical and nursing documentation, observations and order comms already on Sunrise EPR, implementing ePMA was the most important next step in improving patient safety and reducing drug errors.

Driven by digital teams working alongside pharmacy and clinical specialists, integration with existing systems was key.

Israr Baig, Associate Pharmacy Director at GHFT said, “Improving patient safety by reducing errors was central to this go-live. Before ePMA was introduced, a drug may have been dispensed for a patient and sent to a ward, the item may be lost and re-dispensed. Now, there is a clear record of all supplies made to wards, preventing duplication significantly.”

He added, “Sunrise is integrated with EMIS, the Trust’s pharmacy supply interface, which removes the need for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to transcribe between the two systems, reducing errors.”

Doctors and nurses on the wards can also automatically order medicines through Sunrise, so they no longer need to make a physical visit or phone pharmacy to prescribe.

Israr continued, “Each clinician can see where they are in the prescribing process by checking the tracking boards – from admission to discharge, by role and task. With remote access, we can carry out important checks and validations from wherever we are, if needed. And we can run reports to give us essential information on quality and safety, as well as supporting planning.”

As part of ePMA implementation, GHFT was able to move to electronic discharge summaries, meaning that timely communication with GPs has been instantly improved. This has also led to operational improvements to encourage early discharge now that medication discharge information is viewable on EPR.

“ePMA is one of the biggest digital changes we’ve introduced,” said Dr Paul Downie, Chief Clinical Information Officer and Chief Clinical Safety Officer at GHFT. “As well as delivering safety benefits for our patients, it has enabled our operational teams to support early discharge. We know that discharges home are often delayed whilst patients wait for essential medications. Going digital has given us better visibility of who needs what and when – resulting in discharges earlier in the day and better flow through our hospitals. “

Despite having the lowest digital maturity rating for a trust its size less than four years ago, GHFT is now setting its sights on HIMSS Stage 6. This includes having 25% of its medications administered and managed under a fully digital, or closed-loop system, by 2024.

Rachael Fox, Executive Vice President, UK & EMEA, Altera Digital Health said, “It has been a pleasure to work with the team at GHFT, which has gone from strength to strength on its digital journey. We are very pleased that Sunrise has been at the heart of this. Since initially going live with Sunrise in June 2021, the trust has brought about incredible change. We feel this shows that it is possible to quickly and safely deploy technology that is going to have an incredible impact on patient care.”

Nebraska hospital contract renewal points to company’s momentum with its community hospital EHR

NEW YORK – June 8, 2023 – Altera Digital Health, a global health IT innovator, and Columbus Community Hospital (CCH), a community-owned, not-for-profit hospital in Columbus, Nebraska, today announced the hospital is extending its use of the Paragon® electronic health record (EHR) by seven years. A Paragon client since 2010, the 50-bed hospital will also now leverage upgrade services as part of its Altera subscription to ensure it remains up to date with the EHR and takes full advantage of future Paragon releases.

CCH offers a wide range of services to Platte County and its surrounding communities, including emergency care, intensive care, surgical services, imaging services, women’s health and rehabilitation services. The organization’s vision is to provide the highest quality care in Nebraska. Its usage of Paragon and partnership with Altera have given it the digital tools and support needed to continue elevating healthcare experiences for its patients, providers and other staff members. Additionally, the upgrades included in the Altera subscription utilize repeatable, reliable processes so organizations like CCH gain resources needed to better plan for the future within a predictable cost model.

“Columbus Community Hospital is dedicated to delivering compassionate, personalized care to every patient we serve, and having the right technology partner is essential to that commitment,” said Michael Hansen, President and CEO, Columbus Community Hospital. “We’ve been using Paragon for more than a decade, and we recognize the time and resources Altera has dedicated to keep making the solution even better.”

Paragon is an end-to-end digital health solution designed to address the needs of community and critical access hospitals. The EHR reduces workflow complexities so hospital staff can focus on delivering quality care and strengthening financial and operational performance. Several Altera clients, including Bergen New Bridge Medical Center and Pipeline Health, have also recently extended their Paragon contracts, demonstrating the trust Altera partners have in the solution and the company’s ongoing guidance.

“It’s rewarding any time an organization takes the leap to implement our solutions, but it’s even more validating when an existing client reinvests in Altera’s products, partnership and vision,” said Marcus Perez, President, Altera Digital Health. “Our Paragon team has achieved significant momentum, and I’m excited to see what we can accomplish with Columbus Community Care as we move forward together.”

25 May 2023 – Altera Digital Health’s digital medical record, Altera Opal, has gone live at the Rockingham General Hospital, Murray District Hospital and nearby community health centres in Mandurah and Kwinana. All sites now have read/write access to the State-Wide Digital Medical Record powered by Altera Opal.

Rockingham General Hospital is approximately 50 kilometres south of Perth and has an emergency department and operating theatres, as well as medical, surgical and paediatric wards. Murray District Hospital is much smaller, offering inpatient medical services and palliative care to the people of Pinjarra and surrounding areas.  The implementation of Altera Opal at these sites signals their transition from paper to digital medical records.

Altera Opal was originally known as BOSSnet, and as a digital medical record, is operational in more than 100 sites in Australia, whilst it is also deployed as a document management solution as part of the Sunrise™ Platform of Health in Australia and the United Kingdom. It is also currently being deployed in the US, Canada, Singapore and the Philippines. All development related to Altera Opal is managed and delivered by a dedicated team in Australia.

Todd Haebich, Executive Vice President APAC for Altera Digital Health, said that Altera Opal continues to prove its worth for organisations looking to transition from paper to digital medical records.

“Altera Opal has been particularly effective in Western Australia, where it has enabled many health sites to embark on their digital journeys, and in doing so, establish an ever-growing community of health that clinicians can leverage to deliver even better healthcare,” explained Mr. Haebich.

He continued, “Through its Scanning and Document Management capabilities, it helps health sites effectively and affordably customise their deployment strategies to suit budget and healthcare needs, delivering clever workflows that support effective health information management and clinical coding. Altera Opal can also seamlessly interface with third-party software.”

Jonathan Smith, Chief Information Officer of Health Support Services (HSS), a WA Government agency supporting the WA public health system, said:

“Over the past year, HSS has been working in collaboration with the Department of Health, Health Service Providers and Altera to implement the Digital Medical Record (DMR) solution at a number of new sites across the state. Implementation of the DMR requires a system-wide collaboration and is a precursor step toward implementing an integrated Electronic Medical Record (EMR), which will further increase the electronic capturing of information at the point of care, reducing paper forms to a minimum. HSS acknowledges the dedication and hard work of the project teams and users involved in the deployment of the DMR at the new sites for their efforts in enabling a successful implementation.”

New York – May 11, 2023 – Altera Digital Health (formerly the Allscripts Hospitals and Large Physician Practices business segment) has won a competitive tender to deliver the Victorian Department of Health’s state-wide Health Information Exchange (HIE) solution. It seeks to address one of the biggest challenges in healthcare – the sharing of health information across disparate systems for clinical care. The platform supports Victoria’s digital health roadmap, which prioritizes the availability of patient health information across acute care providers.

The platform will initially provide hospital clinicians with a more complete view of a patient’s public pathology reports. It can be expanded to securely share other clinical information at the point of care.  Secure and timely access to patient information across different care settings enables clinicians to be better informed. This makes clinical decisions and supports safer, while enabling patient health outcomes to be improved.

Dani Arousi, Altera Digital Health’s Global Commercial Director for the dbMotion™ Solution, said that the Victorian Department of Health’s selection of dbMotion confirms the platform’s status as the industry benchmark for clinical information sharing.

“dbMotion is a world-class, proven and enabling solution for healthcare organizations globally to create, build and view a patient’s virtual longitudinal record, and will be a milestone development in Victoria’s digital health journey.”

Altera Digital Health demonstrated that its solution had assisted healthcare organizations and governments of similar size to the Victorian Department of Health to meet their digital health strategic goals, ultimately improving clinician access to patient clinical information no matter where the patient is across their continuum of care.

“We have extensive experience in aggregating clinical information from disparate systems and creating robust longitudinal records across a range of complex acute settings. dbMotion has been implemented in world-leading healthcare organizations in Israel, the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, empowering the Department to leverage a global network to establish a comprehensive and secure HIE platform for Victoria,” added Mr. Arousi.

Altera’s dbMotion solution has already partnered with South Western Sydney Primary Health Network, the first Asia-Pacific implementation of the solution. The New South Wales HIE implementation aggregates primary care clinical records and enables hospital clinicians to view a patient’s primary care record at the point of care.

Altera Digital Health boasts a sizeable footprint in Victoria, where its cloud-hosted Sunrise EHR and other solutions are active in a variety of sites, including Albury Wodonga Health, Grampians Health, Barwon Health, Epworth HealthCare, Gippsland Health Alliance, Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital & Western Health.

1 May 2023 – Altera Digital Health has promoted its Australia and New Zealand head Todd Haebich to Executive Vice President APAC following a sustained period of significant growth for the company. Mr. Haebich’s responsibilities now include Southeast Asia, a market he has extensive experience in, where he will be supported by Anna Grammare, General Manager, Singapore and Philippines.

Todd Haebich joined Altera Digital Health, then Allscripts, in 2015 as an Associate VP Strategic Accounts Australia and New Zealand before being promoted to General Manager in 2018. Since then, he has steered the company through the steady expansion of key client SA Health’s ambitious state-wide electronic medical record across the length and breadth of South Australia. SA Health is now one of Altera Digital Health’s largest global Sunrise™ clients using prime solutions including Sunrise PAS (Registration, Scheduling, SFM), Sunrise EMR, Patient Flow and Altera Opal. Last month, a budget of $31.1 million was confirmed by the South Australian government for the regional rollout of Sunrise which is expected to be completed by late 2024. SA Health are also implementing a state-wide Enterprise Chemotherapy Prescribing System with Altera Digital Health.

Mr. Haebich has also led Altera Digital Health through the opportunity. planning and delivery of a contemporary cloud-based EMR solution to the Gippsland Health Alliance beginning in late 2017 and concluding with the announcement of third and final phase going live in December last year. In New South Wales, Altera has powered Project iRAD (integrated Real-time Active Data), for the South Western Sydney Primary Health Network which is now pioneering open, connected health communities in Australia.  Expansion to New Zealand came in 2022 when Altera Digital Health announced it had won a contract to deliver the award-winning Provation® iPro anaesthesia solutions at the Waikato and Thames hospitals with the go-live expected in the first half of this year.

More recently, Altera Digital Health was awarded the contract to implement a health information exchange (HIE) for the Victoria Department of Health’s pathology reform program.

Marcus Perez, President of Altera Digital Health said that Mr. Haebich’s promotion was richly deserved given his accomplishments in a challenging and ever-evolving market:

“Under Todd’s leadership, Australia and New Zealand have become key geographies for Altera in a relatively short space of time, and he has demonstrated unequivocally that we can compete very confidently with other global brands that have had a much longer presence in-country.”

Mr. Haebich is well placed to deliver on his new role in the Southeast Asia market having lived and worked in Singapore from 2008 to 2014 where he held senior positions with leading healthcare IT companies including Wolters Kluwer and Carestream Health.

“I am delighted and honoured to be leading Altera Digital Health in the Southeast Asia Market where I intend to build on all of the good work that has already been delivered to establish Altera Digital Health as a market leader,” said Mr. Haebich.

“I am particularly grateful to my team here in Australia for their tremendous support and dedication, without which Altera Digital Health would not have established the presence it now has,” added Mr. Haebich.
