31 March 2023 – Altera Digital Health (formerly Allscripts) has won a competitive tender to deliver the Victorian Department of Health’s state-wide Health Information Exchange {HIE) solution. It seeks to address one of the biggest challenges in healthcare the sharing of health information across disparate systems for clinical care. The platform supports Victoria’s digital health roadmap which prioritises the availability of patient health information across acute care providers.

The platform will initially provide hospital clinicians with a more complete view of a patient’s public pathology reports. It can be expanded to securely share other clinical information at the point of care. Secure and timely access to patient information across different care settings enables clinicians to be better informed. This makes clinical decisions and supports safer, whilst enabling patient health outcomes to be improved.

Dani Arousi, Global Commercial Director, dbMotion for Altera Digital Health said that the Victorian Department of Health’s selection of the dbMotion™ solution confirms the platform’s status as the industry benchmark for clinical information sharing.

“dbMotion is a world-class, proven and enabling solution for healthcare organisations globally to create, build and view a patient’s longitudinal record and will be a milestone development in Victoria’s digital health journey.”

Altera Digital Health demonstrated that its solution had assisted healthcare organisations and governments of similar size to the Victorian Department of Health to meet their digital health strategic goals, ultimately improving clinician access to patient clinical information no matter where the patient is across their continuum of care.

“We have extensive experience in aggregating clinical information from disparate systems and creating robust longitudinal records across a range of complex acute settings. dbMotion has been implemented in world-leading healthcare organisations in Israel, the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, empowering the Department to leverage a global network to establish a comprehensive and secure HIE platform for Victoria.” added Mr. Arousi.

Altera’s dbMotion solution has already partnered with South Western Sydney Primary Health Network, the first Asia-Pacific implementation of the solution. The New South Wales HIE implementation aggregates primary care clinical records, and enables hospital clinicians to view a patient’s primary care record at the point of care.

Altera Digital Health boasts a sizeable footprint in Victoria, where its cloud-hosted Sunrise EMR and other solutions are active in a variety of sites including Albury Wodonga Health, Grampians Health, Barwon Health, Epworth Healthcare, Gippsland Health Alliance, Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital & Western Health.

10 March 2023: The West Midlands trust has rapidly deployed Altera Digital Health’s Sunrise EPR solution across its three hospital sites; Worcestershire Royal, Kidderminster Hospital and Alexandra Hospital. This has enabled the trust to quickly embark upon its digital transformation journey, improving patient safety and streamlining clinical workflows.

The system, which went live in January, has been successfully deployed across the trusts 56 inpatient wards. It is expected to improve patient safety, release time to care, and reduce length of stay.

Despite the recency of the go-live, benefits of the implementation are already being realised. Tracking boards are improving visibility of patients, enabling clinicians to prioritise patients based on their clinical need, and handwritten notes are now electronically inputted, eliminating the risk of illegible entries, saving time that was spent rewriting or interpreting notes.

Matthew Little, Chief Nursing Information Officer at the trust, said, “Clinicians can now see every patient’s National Early Warning Score (NEWS), so more effective decisions can be made more quickly. Clinical time, now more than ever, is precious so being able to release time to care is really benefitting patients, improving the standards of care they are receiving.”

Patient safety was a major driver for the project. Matthew said, “The system is enabling documentation to be completed more quickly, and to a higher standard. In the first weekend, more than 46,000 documents were created in Sunrise, including referrals and observations. This is providing clinicians with a much fuller picture of their patients, which will keep them safer and improve their experience of care.”

The system is also helping to release time to care, and further time savings are expected. “Doctors have told us they’re able to complete ward rounds more quickly than before, as all the information is inputted electronically. The forms are auto populated with certain information about the patient, so they can spend more time actually delivering care as opposed to filling out documents,” Matthew said.

The trust opted for a phased approach when deploying Sunrise EPR. Initially piloting to three wards, the trust introduced it to all adult inpatient wards over 4 weeks.  “It was important for us to take a phased approach to the go-live, said Stuart Cooper, EPR Programme Director at the trust. “It enabled us to learn along the way to make the transition as smooth as possible, as for many staff this is their first time working digitally. As a result, we have very quickly been able to improve the baseline of our digital maturity, with minimal disruption to patient care.”

The deployment was led by a multidisciplinary EPR team, made up of technical, clinical, and operational staff, to ensure the solution was reflective of the trust’s specific needs.

Stuart said, “The project has been truly collaborative. We have worked closely with Altera, developing their blueprint and localising it to meet our requirements. Having this flexibility has meant we have been able to build a solution that has started benefitting patients right from go live.”

Next, the trust will be focusing on enhancing the functionality of the system, activating Sunrise EPR in the emergency and outpatient departments, as well as deploying order communications, referrals, and surgery. The trust will also be going live with electronic prescribing and medicines administration as part of the next phase.

Dr Anna Bayes, International Medical Director, Altera Digital Health, said, “The team at Worcestershire have demonstrated incredible commitment to this project, and as a result it has been able to quickly improve its digital maturity. Sunrise users are already benefitting from enhanced multidisciplinary communication, visibility of patient observations and serial assessments as well as gaps in care. Time saved looking for paper records is also a huge advantage for busy ward staff.  This is just the initial stage in Worcestershire’s digitisation and we look forward to building on this momentum for even further benefits to be harnessed.”

February 2023 – Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust (MTW) has successfully deployed Altera Digital Health’s Sunrise™ electronic prescribing and medicines administration (ePMA) functionality trust-wide, which includes two hospitals and two emergency departments, accelerating the trust’s digital maturity.

MTW first went live with Altera Digital Health’s Sunrise EPR 18 months ago, in September 2021, laying the foundation of the trust’s 10-year digital transformation strategy. It has improved operational efficiency and patient outcomes, and played an important role in helping the trust rank seventh out of 120 trusts nationally for its services to patients.

ePMA, the latest ambitious phase of transformation, is now live across the trust, embedded within the EPR. This will improve patient safety by reducing medication errors and improve experiences for clinicians as the EPR is able to enhance their workflows and release time for patient care.

The system will enable accurate, timely prescribing processes, operating as an assistive tool for clinicians. “The system is going to completely transform ways of working for our pharmacists, many of whom are working digitally for the first time,” said Mildred Johnson, Chief Pharmacist and Chair of EPMA Project Board, Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust.

The system will increase prescriber awareness when duplicate high-risk medicines are prescribed, starting with anti-coagulants, reducing medication errors and giving pharmacists extra assurance. “We expect this to be especially valuable in busy periods, when medication errors can be more likely,” explained Mildred. “The system has been set up for an alert to be generated when there is a high-level drug interaction during the prescribing process.”

The roll out was carefully conducted over just two weekends building on learnings from previous go-lives, as well as multiple trial runs before launch. Programme Director for EPR and Digital Transformation at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Foundation Trust, Jane Saunders said, “The success of the project was down to the thorough training, preparation and support put in place before and throughout the go-lives. The trial runs we conducted especially helped us to make better operational decisions and streamline the launch, causing minimal disruption to patient care.”

Eighty percent of nurses were trained before go-live, with training methods including videos, webinars, written guides and face-to-face sessions, so staff could select the best approach for them. This meant that little support was required by nursing staff from the pharmacy ambassadors and transcribing team who were superusers.

Mildred said, “We’re seeing a major benefit to our on-call doctors and pharmacists, who are now able to prescribe remotely as they can access the system from anywhere. It means our clinical staff on wards are spending less time on the phone to get medication prescribed and can spend more time with patients.”

Reflecting on the go-live, Jane said, “The fact we have been able to achieve such rapid and impactful transformation is testament to the collaboration between our team and Altera Digital Health.

“Our mission is to offer outstanding care and this latest go-live is helping us to achieve that. Our digital journey is underpinned by our EPR, and this is a major step.”

Dr Anna Bayes, International Medical Director, Altera Digital Health, said, “The dedication from the team at MTW underpinned by robust clinical engagement has enabled the trust to take a significant step in its digital transformation whilst enhancing patient safety.”

Next, MTW will work towards piloting Electronic Discharge Notification (EDN) across four wards in the next month as well as rolling out ePMA in maternity later this year, with Paediatrics to follow in 2024.

The trust will also deploy the Sunrise™ Surgical Care solution alongside the Provation® iPro anaesthetic record later this year.

16 Jan 2023 – Altera Digital Health’s Sunrise™ EMR and PAS has gone live at the Lyell McEwin Hospital of the Northern Adelaide Local Health Network (NALHN), representing another milestone development in Altera’s (formerly Allscripts) partnership with SA Health to implement a single integrated PAS and EMR across the state of South Australia.

The Lyell McEwin Hospital (LMH) is a major tertiary hospital located in Adelaide, South Australia, that provides medical, surgical, diagnostic, emergency and support services to a population of more than 400,000 people living primarily in Adelaide’s north and north-eastern suburbs. It is affiliated with the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia. The hospital is a major teaching institution for healthcare professionals that offers emergency, complex and multi-day surgery, as well as day surgery and other procedures. In addition to LMH, the full clinical functionality of the Sunrise™ EMR and PAS is now also in use at the maternity outpatients at Modbury Hospital, GP Plus Elizabeth, GP Plus Super Clinic Gilles Plains, Salisbury Primary Healthcare Services, Child Protection Services and Outpatients, Virtual Typing Pool and Muna Paiendi (Aboriginal health).

In October 2022, the Sunrise PAS went live with key clinical functionality in the emergency departments at LMH and Modbury Hospital. It is expected that the Sunrise EMR and PAS will go live at the inpatient and outpatient sites of the Modbury Hospital early next this year, as well as achieve full clinical activation at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, the last of Adelaide’s metropolitan hospitals that will go fully live with Sunrise, later in the first quarter 2023.

Wendy Sutton, EMR Program Operations Director, SA Health, said that Altera Digital Health has an excellent track record delivering health information solutions for hospitals around the world, including the Asia Pacific region.

“Our partnership with the company commenced about 10 years ago. Since then, our teams are working closely to deliver an integrated, state-wide electronic medical record and patient administration system—Sunrise EMR and PAS—across South Australia,” Sutton said.

“Sunrise EMR and PAS from Altera helps us improve clinical safety and efficiency by providing a single patient record across all of our facilities, as well as integrating all administrative, financial and clinical information for a standardised approach to care across all our health services. It is not just implementing the existing solutions—it is customising them for the purposes of SA Health. That’s where the collaboration with Altera team is critical—working closely together on tailoring and optimising the solutions to support our administrative staff and clinicians at the South Australian Hospitals more efficiently.

“The successful implementation of the full clinical functionality at the Lyell McEwin Hospital, Northern Adelaide Local Health Network (NALHN) is an excellent outcome of the symbiotic collaborative work between our teams at SA Health, NALHN and Altera Digital Health.”

Sutton added, “One of the key achievements in this activation was the introduction of the single medical record number (MRN) across the network to streamline patient administrative management and clinical care.”

Altera Digital Health Australia and New Zealand General Manager Todd Haebich congratulated SA Health on the ‘Lyell Mac’ go-live.

“These are challenging times in healthcare across Australia, but SA Health has maintained a focus and commitment to the rollout of its integrated EMR and PAS despite the massive impact of COVID-19 and other health system pressures,” Haebich said.

“This has been a momentous and exciting 18 months for Altera in South Australia, with Sunrise extending its footprint to incorporate the Flinders Medical Centre and the Lyell McEwin Hospital with full clinical activation at the Modbury and Women’s and Children’s hospitals expected in a matter of months,” Haebich added.

This year has also seen the further rollout of the Sunrise Document Management (SDM) solution, powered by Altera Opal, as well as the Sunrise Record Tracking solution, to the remaining sites using Sunrise following the initial implementation at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and Mt Gambier Regional Hospital.

17 Dec 2022 – The third phase of Gippsland Health Alliance’s (GHA) electronic medical record (EMR) rollout has gone live with Altera’s Sunrise™ EMR clinical suite now in full application across GHA’s major regional and subregional health services encompassing Latrobe Regional Hospital, Central Gippsland Health, Bairnsdale Regional Health Service (servicing east Gippsland), West Gippsland Healthcare Group and Bass Coast Health. The system is Australia’s largest EMR deployment on Microsoft Azure and incorporates 600 beds across five health services in total.

Altera Digital Health won the competitive tender to deliver an EMR solution to the GHA in late 2017 and Latrobe Regional Hospital was selected as the first site in the Alliance to implement the Sunrise EMR clinical suite. Phase 3 of the EMR rollout commenced in January 2021 with the Emergency Department of Central Gippsland Health, Bairnsdale Regional Health Service, West Gippsland Healthcare Group and Bass Coast Health activating Sunrise Emergency Care after a six-month implementation period, which was followed by the extension of the Sunrise Acute Care module (within the Altera Sunrise EMR Platform of Health) having been successfully extended across the GHA footprint.

Todd Haebich, General Manager of Altera Digital Health Australia and New Zealand, said that GHA deserves great credit for its vision and achievement, especially considering the complexities and challenges brought about by COVID-19.

“GHA has firmly established itself as one of the pioneers of digital health in Australia and we are enthusiastic about our partnership rolling out Sunrise™ across a very sizeable geography and in four hospitals simultaneously,” explained Mr. Haebich.

“The system enables the scaling up of infrastructure across Gippsland as a cloud-based service, and this benefit was realised during the COVID-19 pandemic when physical infrastructure services were so heavily impacted,” Mr. Haebich added.

Adrian Shearer, Chief Information Officer of GHA, said that the rollout of Sunrise™ across Gippsland establishes the groundwork for the further growth and development of digital health interventions in the region.

“The public health industry is rapidly evolving and technological developments are improving patient outcomes at a prolific rate,” explained Mr. Shearer.

“Our region-wide cloud-based platform enables us to introduce best-of-breed health-tech solutions to what is essentially a large regional community and also to attract the best administrative talent because the system can be accessed remotely.”

Dr Simon Kos, Health Industry Executive, Microsoft Australia said that GHA, like all other health services, requires a reliable, fast, flexible and resilient EMR that supports patient outcomes and operational efficiency.

“Scalability is evident in GHA’s rapid deployment across multiple facilities, and improved security of sensitive health information is paramount. A cloud deployment model is the engine enabling digital transformation and GHA has made history in what it has achieved in partnership with Microsoft and Altera.”

GHA is a consortium of publicly funded health services in the Gippsland region of Victoria, east of Melbourne, covering some 41,556 square kilometres (16,045 sq mi).

7 November 2022: Medway NHS Foundation Trust has successfully deployed the Sunrise™ electronic patient record (EPR) system in its Emergency Department as well as its electronic prescribing and medicines administration (EPMA) functionality across the hospital in phase two of its EPR delivery strategy.

The rapid go-live of Altera Digital Health’s Sunrise EPR within Medway NHS Foundation Trust’s Emergency Department (ED) and the introduction of EPMA across ED and inpatient wards marks the successful completion of the second phase of the trust’s EPR strategy. The trust successfully completed both go-lives within four days of each other – on 24 September and 28 September 2022, respectively. This follows the earlier implementation of Sunrise across the trust’s 24 adult inpatient wards, achieved in a record-breaking five months.

This latest phase of the wider EPR implementation project will drive better patient care with significant improvement to patient flow throughout the hospital, including faster admission to inpatient wards, greater oversight of patient data and quicker, more efficient discharge.

As with the phase-one deployment, Medway prioritised the formation of a multidisciplinary team, with clinical, operational and IT staff collaborating to deliver the project—this time also with the addition of pharmaceutical leads to support the EPMA delivery.

Michael Beckett, Director of IT at Medway NHS FT said, “We understand the importance of having clinical input into digital transformation projects and have taken steps to ensure that we have the right mix of expertise. Having a dedicated pharmacist on this project has been critical in terms of the development of the medication catalogue and order sets. This will ensure that our EPR provides improved patient safety, better auditing, and financial benefits in terms of stock control or prescribing management.”

During the planning phases, the project team looked to Altera Digital Health and other trusts’ for best practice approaches, as well as applying lessons learnt from the phase-one project at Medway.

Suzanne O’Neil, EPR Director at Medway NHS FT, said, “ED is incredibly busy and so we had to ensure that the go-live didn’t have a negative impact. In order to mitigate this risk, we took steps such as bringing in extra staff and ensuring that digital champions were stationed within the department to provide support. We also provided a quiet room where the digital champions could give additional training, away from the busy department.”

The trust benefitted from the success of the earlier implementation of Sunrise across the hospital’s inpatient wards, with clinical staff asking when the system would be introduced in ED. “There was a real desire to be able to use Sunrise in ED,” explained Suzanne. “Doctors and nurses didn’t want to start a patient’s notes on paper and then move to digital; it is much more beneficial to have the whole patient pathway documented digitally. This really helped to accelerate the implementation of Sunrise within ED as the staff buy-in was there from the start.”

For the EPMA go-live, the trust employed a transcribing team that included pharmacists from neighbouring trusts. Suzanne said, “Transcribing teams consisted of junior doctors, pharmacists and technicians. We didn’t have enough pharmacists to cover this extra work, so we turned to our neighbouring trusts for support.”

The team systematically transcribed the notes for each inpatient into the EPMA. Once a ward was complete, it was given a date and timestamp that was signed off by the pharmacist and the junior doctor.

Suzanne said, “We started with surgical and frailty wards because, historically, we don’t change the medication that often. This gave our transcribing teams the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the system before doing the wards with more complex medicine prescriptions.”

Just four days after rolling out EPMA functionality across the hospital, the trust activated the EPR in its ED. It took several steps to ensure the ED launch went smoothly, including organising a multi-agency discharge event that brought together region-wide partners to undertake intensive discharge activity to create capacity, and therefore mitigate any impact on ambulance handovers.

The trust is already seeing the benefits of the recent go-lives and is planning to undertake formal evaluation studies in order to fully understand the benefits to patients and staff.

Michael said, “One of our surgeons has reported the benefits of being able to clearly read what is written on drug charts and the benefits of using a catalogue that clearly states dosage. Discharge notices are also automatically populated, so we know that the right information is sent to GPs and patients and our clinical colleagues are not having to duplicate inputting this information. We also know that we now meet the requirements of the Professional Record Standards Body, which was a strategic objective for the trust.”

Paula Ridd, General Manager UK & Ireland at Altera Digital Health, said, “Once again, Medway has demonstrated remarkable levels of planning and determination to achieve two significant go-lives within days of each other, proving that digital transformation can be achieved in a matter of months, not years. We were delighted to support the talented team throughout this project and, with the help of our other NHS clients, provide best practice guidance and advice based on recent experience.”

The continued partnership will support SingHealth in streamlining its clinical workflows
to enhance care coordination

SINGAPORE – 19 July 2022 – Altera Digital Health, formerly the Allscripts Hospitals and Large Physician Practices business segment, a global leader in healthcare IT, has signed a multi-year agreement with Singapore’s largest public healthcare group, SingHealth, for the use of its Sunrise™ suite of healthcare IT solutions across its group of institutions. The partnership is an extension of an agreement signed with Allscripts in 2017, and will continue through to 2029 and provide SingHealth with ongoing support of Altera Digital Health’s electronic medical record (EMR) platform. SingHealth, supported by the national HealthTech agency Integrated Health Information Systems (IHiS), has used the SunriseTM Clinical Manager System since 1998, and the comprehensive EMR platform suite will continue to elevate SingHealth’s multi-disciplinary and integrated care approach for more than 20,000 healthcare professionals in its network of acute hospitals, national specialty centres, community hospitals and polyclinics, which serves more than half of Singapore’s population.

“We are very excited to continue our partnership with SingHealth, which marks the first step of our Altera journey in Singapore and the region,” said Marcus Perez, President of Altera Digital Health. “Altera Digital Health is committed to driving a new era of healthcare powered by the Platform of Health; one with greater interoperability and lessened information burden that drives value-based care for improved health outcomes.”

Anna Grammare, General Manager of Altera Digital Health Singapore, added, “Our partnership with SingHealth to deliver our SunriseTM suite is a strong representation of how we can support healthcare ecosystems with the foundation for the Platform of Health. Through our platform approach, we hope to enhance the way healthcare is delivered while alleviating healthcare workers’ workloads and inspiring healthier communities.”

The SunriseTM solution suite is a comprehensive, open platform that connects all aspects of care across multiple healthcare disciplines. Equipped with application programming interfaces (APIs), the highly configurable platform will continue to be implemented by IHiS to adapt to SingHealth’s clinical workflows and integrate with its suite of systems for seamless interoperability. The use of SunriseTM will also serve as an interface which SingHealth and IHiS can use to build their own healthcare IT solutions on, enabling greater expandability, flexibility and scalability of its clinician-specific workflows that can lead to more seamless patient care.

Professor Ivy Ng, Group Chief Executive Officer, SingHealth, said, “As healthcare needs of Singaporeans continue to evolve, SingHealth is committed to leveraging technology and digital solutions as key enablers to improve care delivery and clinical outcomes, optimise resources and enhance the patient experience. We are heartened to partner with Altera Digital Health, with support from the Integrated Health Information Systems (IHiS), to strengthen our healthcare technological capabilities. To this end, we hope to galvanise technological advances and develop more innovative solutions to address healthcare challenges now and for the future.”

Human-centred design creating enhanced interoperability for the healthcare sector

The SunriseTM platform will support SingHealth in strengthening its care management processes and advancing its continued delivery of reliable, quality healthcare to Singaporeans. As part of the partnership, SingHealth will also gain dedicated access to Altera Digital Health’s specialised technical consulting team, which will provide guidance on enabling additional functionalities and efficiencies in the future that are in line with the healthcare group’s strategic direction.

The system’s scalable technology to digitise the complex processes of clinical care on the EMR platform allows clinicians at SingHealth to manage patients’ health records more effectively and focus on delivering more
value-based care for their patients. Through the platform’s sophisticated features that act as an information hub, clinicians can also holistically review patients’ health records and care plans with a view to improve population health outcomes. Additionally, SunriseTM is integrated with internationally-accepted healthcare terminology that clinicians can utilise to identify patterns of care and to gain additional insights for optimised healthcare delivery.

Innovations that are developed for and empowers clinicians

Altera Digital Health’s partnership with SingHealth demonstrates the company’s commitment and investment in healthcare in the Asia region, following its recent acquisition into the N. Harris Computer Corporation family and rebranding. It also represents a significant milestone in the healthcare IT company’s path towards delivering the Platform of Health, as it will also leverage any learnings and best practices to achieve further scalability in its tech infrastructure for future digital acceleration of healthcare institutions.

Amidst the changing needs in the healthcare industry, Altera Digital Health is focused on delivering innovation across the entire care continuum and strengthening optimization for hospital systems, creating long-term interoperability and revolutionising how healthcare can be delivered.

4 Jul 2022 – Altera Digital Health is entering the New Zealand market following Waikato District Health Board’s (DHB) decision to implement the award-winning Provation® iPro anaesthesia solutions at the Waikato and Thames hospitals.

Waikato Hospital is the major regional hospital in Hamilton, whilst Thames Hospital is a smaller hospital 100 kilometres north of Hamilton. Allscripts will deliver the full suite of Provation iPro anaesthesia information management system (AIMS) including iPro pre-admission testing (PAT), IntraOp, Acute Pain Management (APM), PACU and Analytics at both sites, collectively supporting 34 operating theatres and 37 PACU beds.

The implementation and go-live of the solution will be staggered, beginning with Waikato Hospital in July 2022. Provation iPro will replace paper-based systems at both hospitals.

“The intuitive and easy-to-use Provation iPro anaesthesia solution has been delivered with great success in Australia and Singapore and we aim to replicate this outcome in New Zealand to improve patient safety, clinical efficiency and audit processes,” explained Allscripts Australia and New Zealand General Manager Todd Haebich.

Provation iPro IntraOp went live at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in 2017 followed by the implementation of additional modules including iPro APM and PACU in mid-2018. The iPro PAT module went live at The Royal Adelaide Hospital in 2020, signalling the introduction of the full perioperative information management system.

“As with the initial implementation of Provation iPro in South Australia, we will collaborate extensively with local health authorities and clinicians to configure iPro to reflect local practices and nomenclature,” explained Mr. Haebich.

“This process also reflects our commitment to growing local expertise thereby adding value to the local health sector. The resource requirements on this project will also lead to local job opportunities.”

Waikato DHB is one of 20 district health boards in New Zealand and serves a population of more than 425,000 covering an area of more than 21,000 square kilometres.

“We are delighted to be partnering with the Waikato District Health Board and committed to working more closely on other digital health opportunities with the view of developing localised solutions that can be replicated across New Zealand,” added Mr. Haebich.
