Replacing the existing solution
Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH) uses Provation® iPro as their anaesthesia
information management system (AIMS), enabling them to provide a complete and continuous patient record anywhere anaesthesia care is provided in their 800-bed, state-of-the-art flagship hospital in South Australia.
When the former AIMS solution RAH was using became obsolete, the hospital went to market for a new solution. RAH chose Provation iPro because it was cloud-based and mobile, EMR-agnostic, highly configurable and easy for their anaesthetists to learn and use in their 40+ technical suites. Since moving to Provation iPro, RAH has achieved a more complete anaesthesia record and improved documentation, operating room efficiency, and the ability to audit outcomes to improve patient safety and medication management.

Configuring for unique needs at RAH
The team at RAH was pleased with the implementation process for Provation
iPro. Dr. Ted Murphy, Consultant Anaesthetist, said: “With respects to the
Provation iPro, the initial implementation was quite straightforward. The
product was largely ready to use out of the box.”
The team at RAH was pleased with the functionality of Provation iPro, which
has more configurability than similar solutions they’ve seen in this space.
According to Dr. Murphy, the partnership with Altera Digital Health made the
configuration process easy: “In that respect, the support and assistance we
received from the Provation iPro team at Altera Digital Health was exemplary.
They were certainly capable both in terms of the ability to modify the IT part
of the product and also understand the clinical requirements.”
With help from the Altera Digital Health team, RAH was able to configure
Provation iPro to meet their specific needs for an AIMS solution. The care
teams were satisfied with the resulting solution. “Altera Digital Health
accommodated virtually every request that we had in terms of changes to suit local phraseology or common terms that we were using or even the way people enter things, whether it by drop boxes or pictorial vision,” Dr. Murphy said.
"With respects to the Provation iPro, the initial implementation
was quite straightforward. The product was ready to use out of the box. However, we obviously configured it to suit local nomenclature and requirements. In that respect, the support and assistance we received from the Provation iPro team at Altera Digital Health was exemplary."

Improving the anaesthetist experience
“RAH is pleased with the uptake of Provation iPro,” notes Nursing Unit Manager Louise McGuire. “The rollout of AIMS has been pretty seamless. The business analysts and change agents worked with us on the implementation of Provation iPro to enable it to be a really easy roll out for the hospital. It went really well. Staff adapted easily, and the uptake was quick.”
Anaesthetists are also pleased with the new solution. Some anaesthetists
became proficient in the system in less than a day, demonstrating how easy it
is to learn and use. Provation iPro also enables RAH anaesthetists to automate collection and recording of data from devices, resulting in more efficient workflows. Information collected during pre-op is readily accessible during future visits, improving patient safety by reducing the likelihood of errors.
Dr. Murphy is pleased with the progress at RAH. “What we ended up with is a
very enjoyable product to use. And it seems to be quite highly regarded across the clinical user base,” he said. RAH looks forward to its ongoing partnership with Altera Digital Health. Dr. Murphy and Nurse Unit Manager McGuire note that vendor responsiveness was critical to the success of this experience and they look forward to ongoing development and continual enhancements that support clinical needs from a vendor that understands both technology and clinical workflows.
“When you get anaesthetists going out of their way to visit you to thank you for AIMS, you know it is doing a good job. One of the overarching comments is how simple it is to use and how great a job we— the RAH project team, Altera Digital Health and Provation— have done, and how well we listened to what they wanted.”
